Decoquinate, lasalocid and monensin for starter feeds and the performance of holstein calves to 20 weeks of age Scientia Agricola
Nussio,Carla Maris Bittar; Huber,John Tal; Nussio,Luiz Gustavo.
The large utilization of coccidiostats in dairy herds has raised the question regards the best product to use, based on better animal performance. Sixty-four Holstein calves were randomly assigned to four treatments at 10 (±4) d of age to evaluate calf performance when fed approved coccidiostats available on the market in Arizona, USA. Calves received a dry calf starter without (control) or with one of the following coccidiostats: lasalocid, 30 mg kg-1; decoquinate, 19 mg kg-1; and monensin, 30 mg kg-1. Calves received 3.6 kg d-1 of a commercial 22% CP:20% fat milk replacer until 6 wk of age. Calves were offered starter "ad libitum" up to 2 kg d-1, and calves had free access to water throughout the trial. Alfalfa hay was offered "ad libitum" after weaning....

Effect of calcium propionate and monensin on in vitro digestibility and gas production R. Bras. Zootec.
Osorio-Teran,Amada Isabel; Mendoza-Martínez,Germán David; Miranda-Romero,Luis Alberto; Martínez-Gomez,Daniel; Hernández-García,Pedro Abel; Martínez-García,José Antonio.
ABSTRACT An evaluation of the effects of monensin and calcium propionate on the in vitro kinetics of gas production, digestibility, carbon dioxide, and minor gas production on different days was performed using the ruminal fluid from eight Suffolk lamb donors, after receiving additives for 1, 10, and 20 days. Treatments consisted of a control ration of 40% grain; 30 mg/kg of monensin in a diet with 40% grain; 10 g/kg calcium propionate in a diet with 30% grain; and the combination of both additives in a diet with 30% grain. The gas production was measured up to 72 h of incubation and all incubation procedures were repeated three times on days 1, 10, and 20. On incubation day 20, the volume and production of methane and minor gases were measured. There was...

Effects of antibiotic growth promoters mixed with mineral supplement on growth performance, ingestive behavior, and mineral intake of grazing bulls R. Bras. Zootec.
Vedovatto,Marcelo; Diogo,José Mauro da Silva; Beltrame,João Artêmio Marin; D'Oliveira,Marcella Cândia; Silva,Cássio José da; Mendes,Clayton Quirino; Cabral Filho,Sergio Lucio Salomon; Franco,Gumercindo Loriano.
ABSTRACT The objective was to evaluate the addition of antibiotic growth promoters to free-choice mineral supplement on ingestive behavior, mineral intake, and growth performance of grazing bulls. Sixty Nellore bulls [initial body weight (BW) of 219±17.8 kg and 15±2 months of age] were divided in 12 marandu grass paddocks. The treatments were: mineral supplement (control), mineral supplement + virginiamycin (VIRG), mineral supplement + lasalocid sodium (LASA) and mineral supplement + salinomycin sodium (SALI). Mineral supplements were formulated with target intake of 60 g d−1 and the growth promoters of 75 mg 100 kg−1 of BW. The experimental design was the completely randomized blocks. There was no treatment effect on ingestive behavior or mineral intake;...

Effects of pentoxifylline treatment before freezing on motility, viability and acrosome status of poor quality human spermatozoa cryopreserved by the liquid nitrogen vapor method BJMBR
Esteves,S.C.; Spaine,D.M.; Cedenho,A.P..
The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of the direct addition of pentoxifylline (PF) to the ejaculates of men with poor sperm quality before freezing on post-thaw sperm motility, viability, acrosome integrity, and agonist-induced acrosome reaction. Semen specimens from 16 infertile men with impaired sperm count and motility (oligoasthenozoospermia) were divided into two equal aliquots: one received no treatment (control) while the other was incubated with 5 mM PF (treated). Both aliquots were cryopreserved by the liquid nitrogen vapor method. Motility was assessed according to WHO criteria. Acrosome integrity and spontaneous and calcium ionophore-induced acrosome reactions were assessed with fluorescein isothiocyanate-conjugated...

FEEDLOT '99, PART I: BASELINE REFERENCE OF FEEDLOT MANAGEMENT PRACTICES, 1999 AgEcon
The National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) is sponsored by the USDA:APHIS: Veterinary Services (VS). The NAHMS Feedlot '99 Study included feedlots of 1000-head or greater capacity from the 12 leading cattle feeding states. Feedlots included in the study represented 84.9 percent of U.S. feedlots of this size and contained 96.1 percent of the U.S. feedlot cattle inventory on feedlots with 1000-head or greater capacity as of January 1, 2000. For the purposes of the study, operations were grouped into two size categories: those with capacities of between 1000 and 7999 head, and those with capacities of 8000 head or more. Beef animals were the main type of cattle placed in feedlots regardless of operation size. Approximately one-half of the placements...

Green propolis extract as additive in the diet for lambs in feedlot R. Bras. Zootec.
Ítavo,Camila Celeste Brandão Ferreira; Graça Morais,Maria da; Ramos,Cristhian Liber; Ítavo,Luís Carlos Vinhas; Tomich,Thierry Ribeiro; Silva,Jonilson Araújo da.
The objective of this paper is to assess the effects of the inclusion of different levels of green propolis extract in the diet of lambs in feedlot on ingestive behavior, nutrients digestibility, physiological parameters and performance. Eight lambs were distributed in double Latin Square with four treatments, corresponding to the inclusion levels (4, 8, 12, 16 mL) of green propolis ethanolic extract (30 g of ground crude propolis was infused in a 100-mL hydroalcoholic solution, 700 mL/L). The diets were composed of Brachiaria brizantha cv. MG5 hay and a commercial concentrate (roughage:concentrate ratio was 50:50) in a dry matter basis. No effect was observed on dry matter (31.2 g/kg of BW), crude protein, ether extract, neutral detergent fiber,...

Borges, Alexandre Secorun; da Silva, Daniel Pessoa Gomes; Gonçalves, Roberto Calderon; Kuchembuck, Marcio Rubens Graaf; Chiacchio, Simone Biagio; Mendes, Luiz Cláudio Nogueira; Bandarra, Ênio Pedone.
Ionophores are antibiotics that are sometimes added to cattle and poultry feed, improving feed efficiency and growth rate, The ionophores currently approved for use are safe at the prescribed levels for the indicated species, Feed containing ionophores are dangerous for horses because they are more sensitive to ionophore toxicity than other species and can lead to sudden death. In this paper we will discuss the ionophore toxicity for horses, pathogenesis, clinical signs, pathology findings, diagnosis and treatment,
